Enrichment

Enrichment opportunities are an integral part of our curriculum at Lawn and we fully recognise and embrace the value of providing children with a wide variety of experiences both in and out of the classroom. For each half term topic, a well thought-through learning opportunity is provided to both contextualise and deepen learning, whilst encouraging a love of the learning. This enrichment opportunity could be a trip out or a visitor or experience in school.

In the Autumn Term the following enrichment activities related to curriculum occurred:

  • All year groups to visit the local Library
  • Whole school visit to the local church at Christmas

  • FS2 Fundamentals Festival
  • Year 1 Cross Country
  • Year 2 trip to Eyam as part of the history curriculum
  • Year 3 visit to a Sikh Guardwara

In addition, sporting opportunities are provided throughout the year for all pupils; attending events, tournaments or skill based sessions with other local schools.

In Year 4 a residential gives pupils the opportunity to experience time away from home in a safe but challenging environment. This trip encourages teamwork, resilience, problem solving, initiative and empathy.....all our values here at Lawn.

In Year 6, a longer residential develops pupils independence further and encourages pupils to take safe risks, have a strong growth mind-set and prepares them for being secondary ready.

Outdoor education is also a valued part of our enrichment programme - with year groups experiencing outdoor activities such as fire lighting, humane animal trapping, bug hunts, water filtration, orienteering and even camping!

We also enrich our curriculum at Lawn by creating links with the community and other schools, such as with Akaal Primary as part of the Linking Schools Project, schools within our Trust and even schools abroad!

There is a wide variety of musical opportunities available to our children to enrich the quality music curriculum provided. In Year 3 pupils learn the ukulele, in Year 4 Derby Music Partnership teaches who class violin tuition, which can continue for those who want it into Year 5. In addition pupils may chose to learn the keyboard, woodwind, recorder, guitar, ukulele or attend Rock Steady. The choir and Young Voices allows our budding singers to share their talents with others.

Children having opportunities to develop a love of learning, support their knowledge and skills and become well rounded citizens of the future is also encouraged out of school through our holiday challenges and our Global Citizenship Award.

The school provides a number of clubs through Soccarstars, choir, chess club, gardening club, running club, netball club, baking, calligraphy, reading club and our before and after school Tree House Club.

At Lawn we also encourage pupils responsibilities and leadership through a wide variety of ways. These develop the values we believe are integral to becoming a proactive and considerate citizen but also develop wider skills.
