Y4's Design and Technology project on electrical switches
Design and Technology equips children with the skills to question, explore and understand its impact on the world and quality of life. It develops the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to carry out everyday tasks confidently and to thrive in an increasingly technological society.
Children learn to analyse ethical and sustainability issues in food systems, alongside social, economic, environmental and political factors affecting nutrition. They are taught both the principles of nutrition and practical cooking skills.
Our curriculum reflects our six core values. Children are encouraged to address global sustainability issues, practise Design and Technology safely, and understand its real-life relevance. By learning about global food production and its wider impacts, they build empathy for people affected worldwide. We foster self-challenge, initiative and resilience in problem-solving, expecting integrity in their work. Teamwork is central, with children evaluating and improving their designs together.
We follow the National Curriculum and link Design and Technology with other STEM subjects to give children a broad, connected understanding. Projects begin with the Design and Technology Association’s guidance, then are adapted to suit our school.
