Year 1

We are looking forward to a great year filled with varied and exciting learning opportunities.
The Year 1 team are:
  • 1Y Mrs Adamson
  • 1A Miss Alexander
  • Year 1 Teacher - Miss Deaken
  • Teaching Assistant - Mrs Sowerby

In Year One, we aim to consolidate and enhance the wide range of skills learnt during the Foundation Stage by continuing to learn through structured play and a practical, creative approach during the first half of the Autumn term. The children are offered different opportunities to experience challenge and success, but they are also encouraged to develop their independence and self-sufficiency in order to work towards formal lessons being introduced.

Within literacy, our philosophy is ‘If you can say it, then you can write it’.  With this in mind, we place a large emphasis on speaking and listening activities through our Talk for Writing sessions.  This enables the children to become confident with how they should compose their written pieces of work and also promotes fluent and audible speech. Phonics is taught daily and is based on the Letters and Sounds syllabus. We hold phonics workshops for parents to attend and our first ‘Stay and Play’ of the school year is phonics-based. Our creative curriculum is designed to ensure full coverage of all New Curriculum objectives for all subjects where appropriate.

We realise that the transition from Reception to Year 1 can be a significant step for children and we appreciate this can be a challenge for many. It is completely normal for some children to feel a little overwhelmed by the most formal approach to learning in Year 1 for a few weeks. However, please be assured all staff in Year 1 are experienced in providing support and guidance to help them through this time. We are always happy to speak to you about any concerns you have and you can contact us after school or via email at the addresses below.
